National News – The Enugu State Government has begun strict enforcement of a N500,000 fine for motorists caught driving against traffic, a move aimed at reducing accidents and improving road discipline.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Enugu by the Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, who said the policy applies across all roads in the state.
According to Ozor, the enforcement follows growing concerns over frequent road accidents caused by one-way driving.
Despite significant investments in road infrastructure, including dual carriageways and medians, many drivers continue to violate traffic rules, especially in busy areas such as Abakpa and the Penoks axis.
The commissioner explained that offenders will not only pay the N500,000 fine but will also undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluation.
This, he said, is to determine whether substance abuse or mental health conditions contributed to the dangerous behavior.
Vehicles involved will be impounded until all penalties are cleared and any recommended rehabilitation is completed.
Ozor stressed that the measure is not intended to generate revenue but to save lives.
He highlighted that daily accidents on well-constructed roads have led to avoidable fatalities, which the government is determined to curb.
Public awareness campaigns have also been launched in collaboration with transport unions and media organisations to educate drivers on the risks of one-way driving.
The government has held meetings with operators of taxis, buses, tricycles, tankers, and tippers to ensure compliance.
Authorities warn that enforcement will remain strict until motorists fully adhere to traffic laws.
Officials believe the initiative will promote safer roads, reduce traffic chaos, and instill discipline among drivers across Enugu State.
