National News – Kobbie Mainoo has won the Premier League Player of Matchweek 35 award, narrowly beating Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi despite his strong performance for Nottingham Forest on May 4, 2026.
The recognition followed official fan voting after a series of standout league fixtures across England.
The Premier League confirmed Mainoo as the winner after he secured 54 per cent of fan votes following Manchester United’s 3-2 victory over Liverpool.
The young midfielder scored the decisive goal and controlled midfield proceedings, playing a key role in United’s push for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Officials highlighted his composure, passing accuracy, and influence in both defensive and attacking phases as key reasons for his selection.
Awoniyi, meanwhile, earned six per cent of the vote after a dominant display for Nottingham Forest in their 3-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The Nigerian forward scored twice, provided a penalty-winning action, and reached a milestone 100th appearance for the club.
His performance helped Forest move closer to Premier League survival, lifting them six points clear of the relegation zone with three matches remaining.
Other nominees included Bukayo Saka, Jeremy Doku, Conor Gallagher, Viktor Gyökeres, and Thierno Barry, reflecting a competitive week across the league.
Despite missing out, Awoniyi’s performance reinforced his importance to Nottingham Forest’s survival push, while Mainoo’s award highlights his growing influence in Manchester United’s midfield.
