National News – Panic gripped students of the College of Engineering, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun campus, Ogun State, after armed gunmen attacked hostels for the second time in less than two weeks.
The latest incident reportedly occurred between 1am and 3am on Friday when about seven hoodlums stormed the student residences, fired gunshots into the air, and robbed students of valuables, including phones and a Lexus ES 350 car.
According to student leaders, at least 15 students were affected during the overnight robbery attack.
Witnesses said the armed men operated freely for nearly two hours before fleeing the area with stolen items.
The attack has intensified fears among students who say insecurity around the campus has become alarming.
The President of the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association at the institution, Oluwafemi Aderupatan, confirmed the incident and criticised the lack of adequate security presence around the campus community.
He explained that the attackers threatened students with guns while looting phones, personal belongings, and the luxury vehicle taken from one of the victims.
Aderupatan disclosed that students contacted the police during the operation, but officers reportedly arrived after the gunmen had escaped.
He further lamented that promises made by security agencies and school authorities following a previous attack had yet to materialise.
The student leader called on Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the police, and university management to urgently strengthen security measures in the area.
He stressed that students could no longer continue learning under fear of repeated armed robbery attacks.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that an investigation had commenced.
She assured residents and students that the command was taking the security breach seriously and working to identify those behind the attack.
The latest incident comes barely two weeks after another armed robbery operation reportedly left students injured while valuables and vehicles were stolen.
