National News – President Bola Tinubu on Saturday, May 9, 2026, congratulated Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, as he marks his 100th birthday scheduled for May 11 in Nigeria, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline, and national service.
The President said his joy knows no bounds, noting that Fasoranti’s centenary milestone reflects decades of public service, education leadership, and political involvement.
He described him as a disciple of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and a key figure in the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria, who served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983.
Tinubu also highlighted Fasoranti’s education at University College Ibadan, University of Hull, and Maguire University in Australia, as well as his role in founding schools in Akure.
He praised his resilience through personal tragedies, including the killing of his daughter Funke Olakunrin in 2019 and past assassination attempts during military rule, noting his continued leadership of Afenifere.
He further commended Fasoranti’s role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, especially during military dictatorship, saying he was among the voices that demanded return to civilian rule.
Tinubu prayed for his long life and thanked him for supporting his political journey and the Renewed Hope administration.
As the Afenifere leader turns 100, the President described him as a moral compass in Nigerian politics, urging younger leaders to emulate his discipline, honesty, and commitment to public good.
Fasoranti is widely regarded as one of the last surviving Awoists, with decades of influence in Yoruba socio-political affairs.
The statement reaffirmed Tinubu’s recognition of elders whose contributions shaped modern Nigeria, especially in governance, education, and democracy advocacy.
The milestone celebration is expected to draw tributes from across political, traditional, and academic circles nationwide.
Observers note that Fasoranti’s century mark underscores Nigeria’s political history spanning colonial era, independence, and democratic transitions, with his life serving as a bridge across generations of leadership.
His centenary has been described as a rare national milestone celebrating endurance and service.
