National News – Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday arrived in Akure, Ondo State, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 100th birthday celebration of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti.

The event drew top political figures, traditional leaders and government officials to honour the respected Yoruba leader for his contributions to Nigeria’s political development.

Shettima landed at the Akure Airport alongside members of the Federal Government delegation and was received by Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and other dignitaries.

Security operatives were also deployed across strategic areas in Akure to ensure a peaceful celebration and protect guests attending the centenary event.

According to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Shettima attended the celebration on behalf of President Tinubu to convey the Federal Government’s goodwill to Fasoranti.

The statement described the elder statesman as one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures and a loyal disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Nkwocha noted that Fasoranti was among the surviving members of the old Action Group during the First Republic and later played a major role in the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.

He also served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State, earning recognition for his contributions to governance and public service.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that a comprehensive security arrangement was put in place ahead of the Vice President’s visit and the birthday celebration.

Police authorities said the operation was designed to prevent security breaches and guarantee a smooth event throughout the state capital.

The celebration marks a major milestone for Fasoranti, whose influence in Yoruba politics and Nigeria’s democratic journey has remained significant for decades.
