National News – Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has thrown his weight behind the 2027 senatorial ambition of fellow activist Aisha Yesufu, who recently declared her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory Senate seat.
Sowore made the remarks during a television interview on Monday, where he stressed that credible Nigerians should actively participate in politics to drive meaningful national change.
Speaking on the growing involvement of activists in Nigeria’s political space, Sowore said people with strong convictions and leadership qualities should not remain on the sidelines.
According to him, political participation remains one of the most effective forms of activism needed to improve governance and rescue society from poor leadership.
Although he openly supported Yesufu’s Senate ambition and expressed hope that she would succeed in the 2027 elections, Sowore criticised her political platform, insisting she joined the wrong party.
He argued that she would have been a better fit in his political movement.
“Yes, I support her ambition completely, and I hope she wins,” Sowore said during the interview, while maintaining that he disagreed with her current party affiliation.
Yesufu recently resigned from the African Democratic Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She explained that the decision was influenced by her evolving political beliefs and her alignment with the vision championed by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The activist also confirmed that she would not merely participate as a party member but would contest for the FCT senatorial seat.
She added that she concluded her responsibilities within the ADC before making her exit official.
The development has sparked discussions within Nigeria’s political landscape as more activists and civil society figures prepare to participate directly in the 2027 elections.
