National News – A leading Nigerian tax expert, Olayinka Oyebola, has urged tax practitioners to uphold ethical standards and transparency in their professional activities, stressing that integrity must outweigh short-term financial gains.
He made the remarks while congratulating members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria after the successful conclusion of the institute’s 28th Annual Tax Conference held in Abuja from May 11 to May 15, 2026.
Oyebola, Managing Partner of Olayinka Oyebola & Co. Consult, said the reputation of the tax profession depends on honesty, accountability, and strict compliance with ethical practices.
According to him, practitioners must avoid compromising standards if they want to maintain public trust and strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s tax system.
The conference, themed “Tax Reforms and Global Relevance: Positioning Nigeria’s Tax System for a Sustainable Future,” focused on improving Nigeria’s fiscal structure and aligning local tax regulations with international best practices.
Oyebola described the conference theme as timely and essential for addressing existing gaps in the nation’s tax administration.
He also praised the leadership of the institute for organising what he called a successful and impactful event capable of shaping the future of fiscal policy in Nigeria and beyond.
Oyebola further reflected on recent regulatory challenges involving his firm in the United States, noting that transparency and corrective actions helped the company overcome the issues and regain regulatory confidence.
The tax consultant warned practitioners against individuals and organisations he described as “sharks” within the financial system who seek to exploit innocent professionals for selfish interests.
He advised tax experts to remain vigilant, structurally compliant, and professionally disciplined at all times.
Oyebola reaffirmed his company’s commitment to collaborating with local and international regulatory agencies to strengthen compliance, transparency, and global standards within Nigeria’s tax industry.
