National News – A Kano State Government House Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Tofa, has alleged that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is indirectly working towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general elections.
The claim, made on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise News in Kano, has stirred political debate over emerging alliances and possible realignments ahead of the next election cycle.
According to Tofa, recent political engagements across Nigeria suggest subtle but strategic cooperation among key political actors that could eventually favour the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He pointed specifically to Kano and the wider North-West as critical zones due to their large voting population and political influence.
Tofa further claimed that Governor Abba Yusuf had, at some point, engaged President Tinubu over alleged plans to defect to the APC alongside Kwankwaso’s political bloc.
He suggested that such discussions, if true, would indicate deeper negotiations within opposition ranks that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
He also argued that the state’s political direction is increasingly influenced by ideological and historical voting patterns that may limit the acceptance of opposition figures like Peter Obi in Kano.
He dismissed reports claiming massive turnout at Kwankwaso’s residence during recent political gatherings, describing figures of up to five million supporters as unrealistic and exaggerated due to venue capacity constraints.
According to him, even major public spaces in Kano cannot accommodate such numbers, suggesting the figures were politically inflated.
Meanwhile, the Kwankwasiyya movement remains one of the most influential political forces in northern Nigeria, with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso maintaining strong grassroots support.
His political structure played a key role in the 2023 elections, particularly in Kano State, where it helped secure the governorship for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
However, recent tensions between political actors have continued to fuel speculation about future alliances ahead of 2027.
Kwankwaso and his allies have yet to respond to the allegations, leaving the claims unverified as political tensions continue to rise.
Analysts say the unfolding situation highlights increasing competition and strategic positioning among Nigeria’s major political blocs ahead of a highly anticipated 2027 general election.
