Suspected bandits have killed one person and abducted two women during an attack on a Fulani settlement in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The attack occurred Monday night in the Sodo/Sawmill area on the outskirts of the town, where armed men reportedly invaded the community, firing gunshots and causing panic among residents.

Sources said the attackers were believed to be targeting a prominent Fulani leader but were unable to locate him. The gunmen subsequently abducted two women identified as wives of the community leader before fleeing the scene.

A resident was killed during the attack.

Security operatives were alerted to the incident, while military personnel reportedly engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat into a nearby forest.

Confirming the incident, Kwara State Commissioner of Police, , said one man lost his life while two women, aged 25 and 35, were abducted.

According to the police commissioner, preliminary investigations showed that the attackers had specifically targeted the Fulani leader, identified as an Ardo, but failed to capture him.

He added that security agencies have launched a manhunt for the suspects, noting that troops had already repelled the attackers before they escaped into the forest.

The incident has renewed concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Kwara North, particularly in Edu and neighbouring local government areas, where residents have repeatedly called for stronger security measures to curb banditry and other violent crimes.
