Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan - National News

National News – Close associates of former President Goodluck Jonathan have dismissed growing speculation that he plans to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

They insist there is no indication that the former leader intends to return to the ballot and describe claims linking him to the race as politically motivated.

The clarification comes amid reports that a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party allegedly registered Jonathan as a member, obtained nomination forms on his behalf, screened him in absentia, and later announced him as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

However, Jonathan’s associates say these actions were carried out without his involvement or approval.

According to sources familiar with the former president’s political circle, Jonathan has not declared any intention to seek office, nor has he begun the consultations, public engagements, and nationwide outreach typically associated with a serious presidential campaign.

They argued that if he were interested in contesting, he would openly identify with a political platform and personally participate in the nomination process.

The associates further maintained that Jonathan’s name is being used by certain political actors to advance factional interests and create confusion ahead of the 2027 elections.

They stressed that neither the former president nor members of his political structure have taken any steps toward launching a campaign.

One source noted that Jonathan recently emphasized that running for president requires strategic planning, consultations, and sustained public engagement.

According to the source, none of these activities have been linked to the former president in recent months.

Despite the denials, officials of the faction promoting Jonathan’s candidacy insist that his silence is deliberate and should not be interpreted as a rejection of the nomination.

They argue that Jonathan has historically entered public office without openly campaigning for positions.

As debate continues, Jonathan’s associates say a formal statement may soon be issued to clarify his position.

For now, they maintain that the former president is not preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election.
