ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to defeating terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality, declaring that the Federal Government will never yield to intimidation by violent groups.

The President also assured Nigerians that his government is intensifying efforts to address the economic challenges facing the country and improve the welfare of citizens.

Tinubu’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” attracted top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack.

Congratulating Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, Tinubu described the milestone as a reflection of the resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration of democracy.

He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 democratic struggle, noting that many endured persecution, injuries and even death in the quest for democratic rule.

The President acknowledged the economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement affecting many communities, assuring Nigerians that the government understands their plight and remains committed to addressing the challenges.

According to him, recent attacks and abductions underscore the need for sustained action, adding that the safe return of all persons held captive remains a national priority.

Tinubu said security agencies are being provided with the necessary support and resources to safeguard lives and property, protect communities and preserve the nation’s territorial integrity.

“The government of Nigeria will never surrender to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he declared.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, the President urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech and divisive politics, stressing that democracy should not be turned into a battlefield.

He particularly advised young people not to allow themselves to be used for political thuggery, misinformation campaigns, ethnic hostility or religious intolerance.

“Do not trade your future for money, drugs, political patronage or fleeting social media applause,” he said.

Tinubu also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media and families to promote peace, tolerance and national unity as the country approaches another election cycle.

He further commended members of the armed forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices and dedication to protecting the nation’s democracy and security.
