National News – Some northern political stakeholders have expressed support for the proposal by Labour Party presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, to serve only one term if elected president in 2027, describing the pledge as a move that could promote national unity and political inclusion.
The supporters said the one-term commitment demonstrates a willingness to place national stability above personal political ambition, particularly amid ongoing debates over power rotation and equitable representation in the country.
According to them, the proposal could serve as a confidence-building measure by addressing concerns about political balance and fostering a more predictable leadership transition that accommodates the interests of different regions.
They argued that the initiative reflects a spirit of political compromise capable of strengthening national consensus in Nigeria’s highly competitive political environment.
One of Obi’s supporters, Ibrahim Hussaini Abdulkarin, said although public scepticism toward politicians is understandable, citizens should not assume that every political promise would be broken.
He maintained that Obi’s record of prudence, consistency and accountability in public service gives many of his supporters confidence that he would honour the pledge if elected.
Within sections of the Kwankwasiyya movement, the proposal is reportedly being considered as a possible foundation for a broader political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Some supporters believe that collaboration between Obi and influential northern political leaders could promote national cohesion and encourage future leadership transitions through consensus rather than political rivalry.
Also speaking, the Kano State Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora, Dr. Muhammad Hamisu, said many northerners view Obi as a credible and trustworthy leader capable of fulfilling his commitment.
According to him, leadership founded on justice, fairness, inclusion and accountability remains essential for Nigeria’s development and prosperity.
The supporters further argued that the significance of the one-term proposal goes beyond the issue of tenure, describing it as a symbol of political accommodation, reconciliation and bridge-building across regional divides.
They expressed optimism that the initiative could contribute to a more inclusive political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially if it receives broader support from key political stakeholders across the country.
