Nigerian music legend Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba (Tuface), has stirred fresh debate in the Afrobeats community after naming Burna Boy as the leading Nigerian artist ahead of Davido and Wizkid, both locally and globally.
Speaking during an interview on the Mic On Podcast, hosted by Seun Okinbaloye and shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the African Queen crooner shared his honest assessment of the current Afrobeats hierarchy.
According to 2Baba, while Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid have all produced music he enjoys, Burna Boy is currently operating on a different level musically.
“I have my favourite songs from each, from all of them,” 2Baba said.
“But if I must be put on the spot, I think Burna is on the top of the game right now.”
2Baba Explains Why Burna Boy Leads
The veteran singer cautioned against direct comparisons between artists, describing them as unfair and subjective, much like comparing painters with distinct creative styles.
He stressed that his opinion was not based on commercial success or financial status, but on a broader understanding of the global music ecosystem.
“Different artists have different styles. There’s nothing like one sing pass,” he explained.
“People have different tastes in what they want and what they like.”
2Baba added that he does not have insight into the artists’ personal wealth or private achievements, making it impossible for him to judge success on that basis.
“I don’t know their bank accounts. I don’t have information about their personal successes,” he said.
“But from common sense and understanding of the music world, I think right now Burna is at the top of this chain.”
Burna Boy’s Global Dominance
The music icon went further to highlight Burna Boy’s international influence, noting that the Grammy-winning artist’s impact extends beyond Nigeria and Africa.
“Not just in Nigeria, in Africa, in the world. He’s on that level,” 2Baba stated.
“But everybody’s doing fantastically well.”
Afrobeats’ ‘Big Three’ Debate Continues
Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid are widely regarded as the “Big Three” of Nigerian Afrobeats, and comparisons over who reigns supreme have persisted for years among fans and industry observers.
2Baba’s comments have once again reignited the debate, adding the voice of one of Nigeria’s most respected music legends to the ongoing conversation.
