Bayelsa Police Contain IED Explosion at State Secretariat, Arrest Suspect in Yenagoa

Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command on Tuesday morning swiftly neutralized a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa, following an early morning explosion.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, the incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. on February 11, 2026.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, personally led a combined team comprising the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit, and other tactical teams to the scene.

The EOD operatives successfully contained the explosion and, during a subsequent search, discovered another unexploded device which was safely defused.

“No life was lost and no property was destroyed in the incident,” the police spokesperson confirmed.

A 60-year-old man identified as Pentecost Elijah, from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was apprehended at the scene and is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

The police assured residents that the situation has been fully brought under control, urging members of the public to remain calm and go about their normal activities without fear.

“The situation is under control and normalcy has been restored,” DSP Mohammed stated.
