Olawepo-Hashim Urges PDP Unity After Strategic Meeting With Bala Mohammed

A presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has intensified calls for party unity following a strategic meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, ahead of forthcoming elections.

Governor Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, received the presidential hopeful during what insiders described as a high-level solidarity and consultation visit in Bauchi.

PDP Unity Talks Amid Political Realignments

The closed-door meeting focused on strengthening cohesion within the opposition party amid ongoing political realignments and internal challenges.

Also present was Zainab Kure, widow of former Niger State Governor Abdulkadir Kure, alongside other key stakeholders.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Olawepo-Hashim stressed that the PDP’s survival and electoral success depend on unity of purpose, reconciliation, and disciplined leadership.

“Our unity is our strength. We must close ranks, rebuild trust, and present a cohesive front capable of delivering credible leadership to Nigerians,” he said.

Repositioning PDP as a Credible Alternative

Olawepo-Hashim commended Governor Mohammed for his commitment to multiparty democracy and steadfast defence of PDP ideals despite political pressure.

According to him, party leaders must rise above personal interests and work collectively to reposition the PDP as a credible alternative to the ruling party.

“We owe it to our members and to Nigerians who look up to us for direction. This is the time for reconciliation, consultation and responsible leadership,” he added.

A statement made available on Sunday disclosed that discussions later expanded to include the PDP Deputy National Chairman, the Bauchi State PDP chairman, and key aides of the governor.

FCT Area Council Elections a “Litmus Test”

As part of his engagement, Olawepo-Hashim also met with PDP chairmanship candidates ahead of the February 21 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The meeting brought together the state chairman, secretary, members of the Board of Trustees, and incumbent Area Council chairmen.

Describing the upcoming polls as a critical test of the party’s grassroots strength and organisational capacity, he urged candidates to remain focused and disciplined.

“The forthcoming FCT Area Council elections will test our readiness. We must remain united in our pursuit of service to the people.”

He further encouraged candidates to prioritise transparency, teamwork, and effective grassroots mobilisation to ensure electoral success.
