Spain Investigates X, Meta & TikTok Over AI Child Porn

Spain’s government has announced plans to investigate X, Meta, and TikTok for potential offences related to AI-generated child pornography, intensifying international scrutiny of AI content.

Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez revealed on X that his administration will request the public prosecutor to examine whether these tech platforms are producing or distributing sexualised AI content involving minors. “These platforms are harming the mental health, dignity, and rights of our sons and daughters. The state cannot allow it,” Sanchez stated.

This comes amid growing concern over AI deepfakes and sexualised synthetic media. Separate investigations are underway in Britain, France, the European Union, and California, particularly targeting X’s AI chatbot Grok. The probes aim to regulate AI tools and prevent their misuse in creating child exploitation content.

According to Sanchez’s office, one in five young people in Spain report being victims of AI-generated nude images while underage, with girls disproportionately affected. The move highlights the Spanish government’s commitment to digital safety, AI regulation, and child protection online.

Sanchez, a vocal critic of tech magnates he calls “techno-oligarchs,” has previously advocated for stricter rules on social media platforms to curb disinformation, violent content, and online pornography. His recent proposal to ban social media use for children under 16 sparked public disputes with X owner Elon Musk and Telegram founder Pavel Durov, reflecting his broader push for responsible AI and social media governance.

The Spanish probe signals a major step in global AI accountability, putting pressure on leading platforms to address the ethical and legal challenges of synthetic media, particularly content involving minors.
