Peter Obi and Sanwo-Olu Extend Greetings as Lent and Ramadan Begin

Nigerian leaders have extended warm wishes to citizens as the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begin simultaneously on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

In a statement, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi described this convergence as “a rare spiritual alignment to cherish and revere.” Highlighting that both seasons start on the same day for the first time in many years, Obi called it more than a coincidence of dates. He emphasized its symbolic importance for national unity, shared reflection, and collective renewal amid ongoing governance challenges.

“Both Lent and Ramadan are marked by fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving,” Obi said, describing the period as a “Double Fast” — a divine invitation for Nigerians to transcend differences and embrace shared humanity. He encouraged citizens to combine prayer with action: “Let our fasting remind us of the suffering of our neighbours; let our prayers stand as a shield over our nation. May our sacrifices be accepted, and may this unique alignment usher in a lasting era of peace and unity across Nigeria. A Holy Lent and Ramadan Kareem to all.”

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also conveyed his greetings to the Muslim faithful in the state. “As the holy month begins, I wish all Muslim faithful in Lagos a time filled with peace and reflection,” he said. “I pray that the weeks ahead bring strength, clarity, and abundant blessings. Let us continue to keep one another in our prayers.”

The simultaneous observance of Lent and Ramadan offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect spiritually, strengthen social bonds, and promote unity across faiths. Leaders urge citizens to embrace both prayer and good deeds during this spiritually significant period.
