The Ondo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the gunmen responsible for the killing of Oba Kehinde Falodun, the traditional ruler of Agamo Community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The monarch was reportedly murdered on Wednesday evening after armed men stormed his palace, raising fresh concerns over insecurity and bandit attacks in Akure North.
Gunmen Storm Palace in Akure North
According to community sources, about 10 armed men invaded the area and headed straight for the palace. The attackers allegedly attempted to abduct the monarch, but he resisted.
During the struggle, the assailants reportedly shot at him several times. When the bullets failed to penetrate, they allegedly struck him on the head with a heavy object, leading to his death.
However, police authorities gave a slightly different account. In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said information received around 7:50 p.m. indicated that approximately six armed men forcibly took the monarch from his residence. He was later found a few metres away with gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene.
Police Intensify Surveillance
The police said investigations have commenced and efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects. Surveillance and monitoring activities have been strengthened across the local government area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
Rising Insecurity in Ondo Communities
The killing comes weeks after suspected bandits attacked Ayede Community in the same council area and abducted a pregnant woman, who was later released after ransom was paid.
Following that incident, the Amotekun Corps arrested 12 suspected bandits terrorising the area.
Residents are now calling for stronger security measures to curb rising kidnappings and violent crimes in Ondo State.
