Communities along the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi road have welcomed the Federal Government’s resumption of construction on the long-abandoned highway, praising the efforts of the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, for facilitating the project.
The road, neglected for over three years, will now receive a fresh boost after the Federal Government approved N19 billion for its completion. Barau announced the approval on his verified Facebook page, noting that the funding aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes quality infrastructure and tangible community development across Nigeria.
Barau, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, revealed that the approval followed a crucial meeting in Abuja with the Deputy Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, Mr. Lv Haiming, where pending issues surrounding the stalled project were resolved.
Residents along the route expressed relief and excitement over the resumption of work. Malam Lawan Bala of Rimin Gado town told PUNCH Online that contractors had already returned to the site, ending years of commuting hardships. Sani Sulaiman also praised the government for approving additional funds, highlighting the strategic importance of the road.
“This road links Kano with Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, and the Niger Republic. Beyond economic benefits, it will enhance security and facilitate movement of farm produce to markets across the region,” Sulaiman said.
Initially flagged off for reconstruction on June 11, 2021, at a cost of N62.7 billion, the 100-kilometre Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi road is being upgraded from a single-lane highway to a dual carriageway. The project is expected to ease transportation, boost trade, and improve socio-economic activities across Northern Nigeria.
With construction now back on track, residents and traders are optimistic that the completed road will become a major economic and connectivity corridor, transforming daily commutes and supporting regional commerce.
