The Federal Government has launched a full investigation into the mining disaster in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, which left 37 miners dead and 25 others hospitalized.
The probe team, led by Minister of Solid Minerals Development Henry Dele Alake and represented by Permanent Secretary Faruk Yabo, visited the site Thursday. The delegation included the Director of Mines Compliance, Director of Inspectorate, Director of Environmental Compliance and Special Duties, alongside Plateau State Government representatives.
The tragedy, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, is believed to have been caused by suspected carbon monoxide and sulphite gas emissions, although investigations are ongoing.
“It is highly tragic for a community to lose more than 30 able-bodied persons. We are here on a fact-finding mission,” the minister said, offering condolences to bereaved families.
Alake expressed concern over the absence of technical representatives from the licensed mining company, emphasizing that license holders remain responsible for safety compliance. Early reports also suggest possible violations at illegal mining sites.
National Commander of Mining Marshals, Corps Assistant Commandant Attah Onoja, said the tragedy underscores federal efforts to eliminate illegal mining and ensure enforcement of safety regulations.
Plateau State Commissioner for Environment, Peter Gwom, called for stronger enforcement of the Mining Act 2007, adding that the state is organizing miners into cooperatives, providing safety training, gear, and micro-loans to reduce fatalities.
“We have too many widows and fatherless children due to unsafe mining practices. This must stop,” Gwom said.
Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, conveyed condolences from Governor Caleb Mutfwang, noting his suspension of illegal mining activities to improve safety compliance. Wase LGA Chairman Hamis Anani and traditional ruler Hakimi Bashar Aliyu Adamu Idris welcomed the federal and state response, urging better infrastructure and ongoing government support to prevent future disasters.
