Eric Dane, best known for portraying Dr. Mark Sloan on the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

US media outlets reported Thursday that the actor passed away in the afternoon. His family confirmed the news in a statement shared with CBS and other major networks.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the family said. The condition, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and loss of motor function.
