Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved the appointment of Nollywood star Mercy Johnson-Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy, a move aimed at strengthening communication between the state government and residents.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Musa Ikhilor, in Benin City on Thursday. The appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, transparency, and effective public engagement in Edo State.
Mercy Johnson-Okojie is one of Nollywood’s most celebrated actresses, with a career spanning nearly two decades and featuring in more than 200 films. Known for her versatility and strong screen presence, she has earned numerous awards and nominations, including recognition at the prestigious Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. Her influence extends beyond film, making her one of Nigeria’s most recognisable entertainment personalities.
Beyond her accomplishments in the Nigerian movie industry, Johnson-Okojie is widely respected for her humanitarian and advocacy efforts. Through the Mercy Johnson Okojie Foundation, she has championed women empowerment initiatives, child welfare programmes, education support projects, and healthcare outreach campaigns. She has consistently used her platform to promote civic responsibility, community development, and social awareness.
