Niger Delta Games 2026: Sports as an Instrument of Unity and Youth Empowerment — Tinubu

The second edition of the Niger Delta Games commenced on Friday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, Edo State, with President Bola Tinubu urging organizers to focus on youth and women empowerment.

Represented by the Minister of State for Industry, John Enoh, Tinubu stressed that sports remain a powerful tool for unity, talent discovery, and personal development. He praised the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for sustaining the initiative and noted that his administration prioritizes both human capital and infrastructure development.

“The maiden edition showed that when government provides a platform, Niger Delta youths respond creatively and passionately. This festival is not just about medals but discovering talent and opening pathways for global recognition,” Tinubu said.

Governor Monday Okpebholo announced N20 million for the winning state and N10 million for the runner-up, describing the games as a symbol of resilience, talent, and limitless potential. “Through sports, discipline is taught, character is built, and boundaries disappear. There is no division here, only teamwork and pursuit of excellence,” he added.

NDDC Managing Director Chief Samuel Ogbuku reaffirmed the commission’s commitment as the sole sponsor and encouraged state governments to join in supporting amateur athletes. He noted the event deliberately focuses on homegrown talent rather than hiring outsiders for victories.

Senate President Goodswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Asuquo Ekenyoung, pledged continued support for youth development and entrepreneurship, urging athletes to showcase the true spirit of the Niger Delta.

Over 3,000 athletes from the nine Niger Delta states are participating in the seven-day festival, organized by Dunamis Icons. The event promotes unity, empowerment, and cultural pride, inspiring new dreams and friendships across the region.

Tinubu concluded, “Sports remain an instrument of unity and empowerment. Let this platform inspire young talents and showcase the enduring spirit of the Niger Delta.”
