FIFA World Cup 2026 Playoff: Iraq One Win Away From Ending 40-Year Wait

Graham Arnold has declared Iraq ready to “shock the world” as the Lions of Mesopotamia chase a long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup™️ — 40 years after their last appearance in 1986.

Iraq will face either Bolivia or Suriname in the Play-Off Tournament, with a World Cup spot at stake. “We’re going to play without fear, shock the world, and enjoy it,” Arnold said in an interview on the FIFA website. This marks Iraq’s 21st qualifier of a grueling campaign, with the chance to secure only their second-ever World Cup berth.

Arnold’s connection with Iraqi football began in 2004 when he faced Iraq as Australia’s assistant coach at the Athens Olympics. Iraq defeated the Olyroos en route to a fourth-place finish amid conflict at home, and many from that squad later won the 2007 Asian Cup. “I’ve always felt Iraq underachieved in World Cup qualification. Getting them back can inspire a nation obsessed with football,” Arnold said.

Since taking charge in May 2025, Arnold has led Iraq through a challenging campaign. A 1-0 win over Jordan sent them to the AFC fourth round, and a 107th-minute penalty against the UAE secured their playoff spot.

Seeded into the Play-Off Final, Iraq now meets either Bolivia or Suriname in Monterrey on 31 March. Arnold emphasized preparation and focus: “This squad will leave everything on the pitch. We go there to win, not to avoid losing.”

Based in Baghdad, Arnold has fully immersed himself in Iraqi football, attending domestic matches and implementing measures such as social media bans during camp. “Technically, the players have everything needed. We’re more compact, disciplined, and tactically aware than before,” he said.

Should Iraq qualify, they will join France, Senegal, and Norway in Group I. Arnold remains confident: “The pressure is on our opponents. We have nothing to lose. We’ll play without fear, shock the world, and enjoy it.”
