Two of the Nigeria Premier Football League’s most decorated clubs clash on Sunday as Rivers United FC host Enyimba FC in a high-stakes Matchday 27 encounter in Port Harcourt.
Between them, the sides boast 10 league titles and consistent continental appearances. Yet, their objectives this season could not be more different.
Rivers United Chase NPFL Title
Rivers United sit third on 42 points from 22 matches and remain firmly in the NPFL title race. Crucially, they have four games in hand over the leaders, giving them a strong opportunity to close the gap in the coming weeks.
The Pride of Rivers are unbeaten in their last five league matches, recovering well after a 4-1 defeat to Barau FC ended a nine-game unbeaten run. Their most recent outing saw them secure a dramatic 1-1 draw against Kwara United in Ilorin, with Boluwaji Sholumade scoring deep into stoppage time after a goalkeeping error.
Backed by home support at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Rivers will look to strengthen their grip on the title chase.
Enyimba Fight to Avoid Relegation Trouble
Enyimba, meanwhile, sit 14th with 31 points — just two above the relegation zone. The People’s Elephant have managed only one win in their last four matches, prompting a reshuffle in the technical crew with Emmanuel Deutsch appointed head coach and Daniel Eke as sporting director.
Defender Paul Odeh remains optimistic, pointing to the goalless reverse fixture in Aba as proof they can earn points away from home.
However, Enyimba will be without suspended striker Bassey John, while injuries to key goalkeepers add to their concerns.
Since 2016, Rivers United have won nine of their 21 league meetings, with six draws and six Enyimba victories. With pride, points, and positioning at stake, Sunday’s showdown could prove decisive at both ends of the NPFL table.
