Tinubu Confirms State Police Plans, Urges Calm Amid Kano Tensions

Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu on Monday reaffirmed that the establishment of state police to tackle rising insecurity across Nigeria will proceed as planned. Speaking at an interfaith Ramadan Iftar with governors and senior officials at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Abuja, Tinubu assured Nigerians that the initiative will not be postponed.

“What I promise you is not to be postponed. We will establish state police to combat insecurity,” Tinubu said, highlighting the administration’s commitment to security reforms.

He also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic recovery, stating, “We are out of the woods. We are out of the dark tunnel of uncertainty. The economy is showing up.”

Addressing political tensions in Kano State, Tinubu urged Governor Abba Yusuf to exercise restraint following his defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has sparked disputes over the deputy governorship.

“I saw the crisis on TVC news, please temper justice with mercy,” he appealed, emphasizing the need for calm and inclusivity. Tinubu further called on party leaders to accommodate young members, stressing, “Let’s see the young ones breathe too.”

The President commended Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum for interfaith outreach initiatives and encouraged governors to extend development opportunities to grassroots communities. He also highlighted the significance of Ramadan coinciding with the Christian Lent season, advocating unity, discipline, and sacrifice.

Earlier, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma praised Tinubu for fostering national unity, stressing that religious and ethnic differences should not guide political decisions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, several cabinet members, and multiple state governors attended the gathering. Prayers were offered by State House Chief Imam Abdulwaheed Sulaiman for Muslims and Governor Agbu Kefas for Christians.

Tinubu’s annual Ramadan Iftar continues to serve as a platform for dialogue, inclusive governance, and cooperative leadership across Nigeria.
