In a major shake-up within Nigeria’s security architecture, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly relieved Kayode Egbetokun of his duties as Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
According to reports, the President directed Egbetokun to step down following a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday.
Sources within the Presidency of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that preparations are already underway for a formal handover ceremony.
Egbetokun, who was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, and later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023, is expected to hand over to Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu, who will serve as his successor.
Though no official statement has been issued as of press time, credible insiders disclosed that the Presidency is finalizing arrangements for the transition, signaling the beginning of a fresh phase in Nigeria’s internal security leadership.
Egbetokun’s removal is seen by analysts as part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to restructure the nation’s security apparatus and inject new energy into the system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Under Egbetokun’s leadership, the police undertook several reforms and operations, but his tenure was also marked by mounting criticism over rising insecurity and operational lapses in several parts of the country.
Sources close to the Office of the National Security Adviser suggest that the decision may have been influenced by recent security challenges and the government’s desire for “renewed efficiency” in law enforcement.
AIG Tunji Disu, who previously served as head of the Intelligence Response Team and as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, is known for his operational experience and no-nonsense leadership style.
His appointment is expected to bring a more tactical and intelligence-driven approach to policing.
Political watchers say Tinubu’s latest decision reflects a trend of reshuffling key figures within the security sector, possibly paving the way for broader reforms in the coming months.
As Nigerians await an official announcement, attention now turns to how AIG Disu will navigate the complex challenges of policing a nation grappling with insecurity, economic stress, and political tension.
