Honda Suspends Guadalajara Plant After El Mencho’s Death Triggers Cartel Violence

Japanese automaker Honda has temporarily suspended operations at its manufacturing plant in Guadalajara, following a wave of cartel violence sparked by the killing of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as El Mencho.

The 59-year-old leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was killed during a military operation in western Mexico.

Authorities confirmed he died from injuries sustained while being transported to hospital by helicopter.

Honda Halts Production Amid Security Concerns

According to a company spokesperson, Honda suspended activities at its Guadalajara facilities as a precautionary measure while assessing the rapidly evolving security situation.

Armed CJNG members reportedly burned vehicles and blocked highways across 20 of Mexico’s 32 states in retaliation for their leader’s death.

The violence was particularly concentrated in Guadalajara and surrounding metropolitan areas, where Honda operates a key manufacturing plant.

State authorities later announced that public transport was running at about 70 percent capacity, with schools scheduled to reopen shortly after the unrest.

Casualties Mount After Military Operation

Official reports indicate that at least 27 state security personnel, 46 suspected cartel members, and one civilian were killed during the operation and subsequent clashes.

The scale of the violence has raised fresh concerns about cartel power and public safety in Mexico’s industrial hubs.

Impact on Mexico’s Auto Industry and World Cup 2026

Mexico remains a major automotive manufacturing hub, contributing approximately 3.6 percent to national GDP.

Global brands such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors, BMW, and Audi also operate factories in the country.

Guadalajara is also set to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Despite the recent violence, officials maintain that security measures remain in place to protect residents, businesses, and upcoming international events.
