President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the newly decorated Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to reform the Nigeria Police Force and confront rising insecurity across the country.
Speaking during the decoration ceremony at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu described Disu’s appointment as coming at a defining moment for Nigeria’s security landscape.
He urged the new police chief to strengthen discipline, enhance inter-agency collaboration, and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
Nigeria continues to grapple with banditry, terrorism, and violent crimes, placing significant pressure on the Nigeria Police Force.
Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s operational experience and leadership track record, particularly from his service years in Lagos.
In his response, Disu declared a total war on police corruption and impunity, pledging zero tolerance for misconduct at all ranks.
“The days of impunity are over,” Disu stated.
“The badge represents public trust. Anyone who abuses it will face disciplinary consequences.”
He emphasized three key priorities for his tenure: professionalism and modernization, accountability and integrity, and stronger community partnership.
According to him, intelligence-led policing, digital tools, forensic investigations, and improved officer training will form the backbone of reform efforts.
Disu also acknowledged existing challenges within the Force, including a trust deficit with communities, outdated systems, and resource gaps.
However, he maintained that the police possess the institutional knowledge and resilience to overcome current security threats.
The Acting IGP stressed that citizens Aare the ultimate stakeholders in policing, noting that effective security requires public cooperation, transparency, and mutual trust.
Disu’s appointment follows the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. Under the amended Police Act, he could serve a full four-year tenure upon Senate confirmation.
Security analysts say the success of Disu’s leadership will depend on his ability to deliver measurable reforms and rebuild confidence in Nigeria’s policing system.
