Team Edo emerged champions of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games after an outstanding performance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The host state sealed victory even before the final four relay races, finishing with an impressive 52 gold medals, 34 silver, and 25 bronze.
The dominant display ensured Edo comfortably topped the medals table at the 2026 Niger Delta Games, reinforcing its growing reputation as a regional sports powerhouse.
Delta Finishes Second, Bayelsa Settles for Third
Delta State secured second place with 39 gold, 29 silver, and 35 bronze medals. The state showed strength in athletics, particularly in the relays, winning three out of four final events.
Defending champions Bayelsa State finished third, claiming 25 gold, 24 silver, and 26 bronze medals, marking a significant drop from their previous title-winning outing.
Other participating states — Akwa Ibom, Abia, Cross River, Ondo, Rivers, and Imo — completed the standings in fourth through ninth positions respectively.
Cultural Expo Adds Colour to Niger Delta Games
Beyond sporting excellence, the Niger Delta Games also celebrated culture and entertainment.
At the Cultural Expo Night headlined by popular Nigerian comedian Okey Bakkassi, Ondo State won the dancing competition, earning a ₦1 million prize.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, doubled the prize money in a surprise gesture, further energising the event.
Edo Officials Hail Victory
Chairman of the Edo State Sports Council, Amadin Enabulele, praised the athletes and credited Governor Monday Okpebholo for supporting the team’s preparations and logistics.
The 2026 Niger Delta Games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organised by Dunamis Icon Limited, showcased emerging athletic talents while strengthening unity among Niger Delta states.
Edo’s triumph signals a new era of sporting dominance in the region.
