Heavy Metal Legend Neil Murray Returns to the Stage with Local Theatre Group

At 75, rock veteran Neil Murray is proving that passion for music never fades. The former bassist of Whitesnake and Black Sabbath has swapped global arenas for community theatre, joining Selkirk Musical Theatre Group’s production of We Will Rock You in the Scottish Borders.

Murray, originally from Gattonside near Melrose, rose to international fame in 1978 when he joined Whitesnake.

Over the next decade, he recorded eight successful albums and toured the world’s biggest venues.

His career also included stints with The Brian May Band and the Peter Green Splinter Group, cementing his reputation as one of rock’s most respected bassists.

Later, Murray became closely associated with the hit Queen musical We Will Rock You, which enjoyed a record-breaking run at London’s Dominion Theatre for more than a decade.

Now, in a full-circle moment, he’s performing the same show on a much smaller — but equally meaningful — stage.

After moving back to the Scottish Borders during the pandemic, Murray felt inspired to give back to his local community.

When Selkirk Musical Theatre Group secured the rights to perform We Will Rock You, he reached out immediately.

Despite not heavily promoting his involvement, the week-long run has nearly sold out, drawing enthusiastic audiences of all ages.

Cast members say Murray has brought invaluable experience, sharing stories from decades in the global rock scene.

Yet he remains modest about the transition from stadiums to small-town theatre, praising the group’s production quality and talent.

For Murray, this return isn’t about fame — it’s about reconnecting with his roots, supporting local arts, and celebrating the timeless power of live music.
