EPL: Bournemouth 1-1 Sunderland – Cherries Stumble in European Qualification Race

Sunderland's Dutch defender #06 Lutsharel Geertruida puts pressure on Bournemouth's English midfielder #16 Marcus Tavernier during the English Premier League football match between Bournemouth and Sunderland at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth, southern England on February 28, 2026

AFC Bournemouth missed the chance to strengthen their European qualification push after settling for a 1-1 draw against Sunderland A.F.C. in Saturday’s Premier League encounter at the Vitality Stadium.

The high-stakes EPL clash saw Bournemouth extend their unbeaten run to eight league matches, but the dropped points could prove costly in the race for European spots.

A win would have moved the Cherries closer to the UEFA Champions League places, yet they remain eighth in the Premier League standings. Sunderland sit 11th, just two points behind.

Sunderland took the lead in the 18th minute through Eliezer Mayenda, who scored his first league goal since August.

Habib Diarra’s powerful effort was parried by goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, allowing Mayenda to tap home from close range.

The Black Cats have maintained a strong record this season when scoring first.

Bournemouth responded with attacking intent, as Junior Kroupi and Marcus Tavernier threatened before the break.

Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced crucial saves to deny Tavernier and Alex Scott in quick succession, keeping the visitors ahead at halftime.

The equaliser arrived in the 64th minute when Roefs misjudged Tavernier’s cross, and Evanilson bundled the ball home for his sixth Premier League goal of the season.

Bournemouth pushed for a late winner, with Alex Jimenez firing narrowly wide in the closing stages.

Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka returned to the starting lineup after recovering from injury, adding composure to the visitors’ midfield.

While Bournemouth’s unbeaten streak continues, this Premier League draw may feel like a missed opportunity in their bid for European football next season.
