The Nigerian Army has trained 60 newly recruited soldiers to strengthen security operations against oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s oil infrastructure and curb illegal activities that threaten the country’s economic stability.

The soldiers, drawn from the 89 Regular Recruit Intake, completed the specialised training barely two months after graduating from the Nigerian Army Depot.

The programme took place at the headquarters of the 3 Battalion Nigerian Army in Delta State, where recruits underwent intensive preparation for security operations in the oil-rich region.

Specialised Training to Protect Oil Infrastructure

The training exercise was supervised by the Commander of the 63 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Moronfolu Shonibare, alongside the Commanding Officer of the 3 Battalion, Major Abdulaziz Haruna, and representatives from other security agencies.

During the programme, the soldiers were equipped with essential operational skills such as crowd control, peace enforcement, anti-terrorism operations, weapons handling, and internal security tactics.

These capabilities are considered vital for protecting oil facilities and maintaining peace in communities across the Niger Delta.

According to Brigadier General Shonibare, the seven-week training programme is a critical step in preparing the young soldiers for real-world military operations.

“This graduation is not just a ceremony but a clear demonstration that these soldiers are ready to uphold the responsibilities and values expected of members of the Nigerian Army,” he said.

Strengthening Security in the Niger Delta

Shonibare emphasised that securing the Niger Delta remains a national priority because the region serves as the economic backbone of Nigeria due to its vast oil and gas resources.

He added that the training aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s strategy to build a more professional, adaptable, and combat-ready Nigerian Army capable of handling complex security challenges.

Major Abdulaziz Haruna also noted that the programme was designed to prepare soldiers for counter-insurgency operations and internal security missions.

Tackling Oil Theft and Pipeline Vandalism

Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have long been major threats to Nigeria’s oil sector.

Criminal networks frequently tap pipelines and operate illegal refineries, causing significant economic losses and environmental damage.

Security agencies are therefore intensifying operations in collaboration with private surveillance organisations, including Tantita Security Services Limited, to curb these illegal activities.

The newly trained soldiers are expected to play a key role in protecting oil installations and maintaining stability across the Niger Delta.

Their deployment is seen as part of broader national efforts to strengthen security and protect Nigeria’s vital energy infrastructure.
