Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the first son of former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has stepped down from his role as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

The resignation, announced on Monday through a statement issued by his media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro, confirmed that Adamu Atiku formally submitted his resignation letter dated March 2, 2026.

In the statement, the former commissioner expressed appreciation to Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Governor of Adamawa State, for the opportunity to serve in the cabinet.

Adamu described his tenure in the ministry as a privilege and thanked the governor for entrusting him with what he called a strategic role in driving infrastructure and energy development across the state.

During his time in office, the former commissioner said he worked closely with permanent secretaries, engineers, directors, and ministry staff to advance infrastructure projects and strengthen energy initiatives across Adamawa.

He also acknowledged the people of Jada, his hometown, for their continuous support, prayers, and encouragement throughout his time in government.

Although he has left his position in the state cabinet, Adamu Atiku emphasized that his resignation does not signal the end of his commitment to public service.

Instead, he said it represents the beginning of new opportunities to contribute to the growth and unity of Adamawa State through other platforms.

Political observers believe the move may be connected to his growing political ambitions ahead of future elections.

Sources close to the Atiku political camp suggest that discussions are ongoing regarding his next political step.

While Adamu has reportedly considered a governorship bid in Adamawa, insiders indicate that his father may prefer that he pursue a senatorial seat instead.

Meanwhile, another member of the Atiku family, Abba Atiku, is expected to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Adamu Atiku’s resignation comes shortly after Governor Fintiri’s recent political realignment, a development that continues to reshape alliances and strategies within Adamawa politics ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
