The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the promotion of 2,339 employees as part of its 2025 Senior Staff Promotion Exercise, reinforcing its commitment to career development, institutional continuity, and effective election administration in Nigeria.

The decision was reached during a commission meeting held on February 26, 2026.

According to a statement released in Abuja by INEC’s spokesperson, Victoria Eta-Messi, the promotion exercise reflects the commission’s effort to reward dedication and strengthen leadership across its organisational structure.

45 Deputy Directors Elevated to Director Rank

At the Directorate level, covering Grade Levels 16–17, 45 Deputy Directors were promoted to full Director status.

However, only 18 of the newly promoted directors will remain in active service, while 27 are expected to retire shortly after their promotion in accordance with public service regulations.

The commission stated that the promotions were conducted based on established procedures and civil service guidelines.

Promotions Across Multiple Senior Positions

The exercise also included promotions across several other senior ranks within the commission.

A total of 91 Assistant Directors on Grade Level 15 were promoted to the position of Deputy Directors on Grade Level 16.

Additionally, 82 Chief Officers on Grade Level 14 advanced to the rank of Assistant Directors on Grade Level 15.

INEC noted that these promotions are part of its broader strategy to maintain a strong leadership pipeline while encouraging professional excellence among its workforce.

Over 2,100 Intermediate Officers Also Promoted

Beyond senior-level appointments, the promotion exercise also affected 2,121 intermediate officers across Grade Levels 7 to 13 working in various departments of the commission.

According to the statement, the promotions were implemented to ensure that qualified staff members are recognised for their years of service, competence, and contributions to the commission’s operations.

Strengthening Institutional Capacity Ahead of Future Elections

INEC emphasised that the promotions are aimed at strengthening institutional capacity as the commission continues preparations for upcoming electoral activities across Nigeria.

The electoral body congratulated the newly promoted staff and encouraged them to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and impartiality while carrying out their duties.

The commission further reiterated its commitment to rewarding merit and maintaining a stable organisational structure capable of delivering credible elections nationwide.
