Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State is reportedly weighing the possibility of leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political insiders say senior APC leaders in Abuja have been courting the governor with an attractive offer that includes an automatic ticket to contest the governorship election in 2027.
Reports also suggest that if the defection happens, the governor may control about 40 percent of elective and political appointments in the state, while existing APC stakeholders would retain the remaining 60 percent.
Although the move is yet to be officially confirmed, discussions around the potential defection have gained momentum due to the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP at the national level.
Appeal Court Verdict May Decide Lawal’s Political Future
Governor Lawal recently addressed PDP stakeholders at the Government House in Gusau, stating that his political future will largely depend on the outcome of the Appeal Court ruling regarding the party’s disputed national leadership.
The PDP is currently battling legal challenges over the legitimacy of its November 2025 national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convention, supported by several PDP governors, produced Tanimu Turaki as the party’s national chairman.
However, the convention has been contested by allies of Nyesom Wike, who dispute its legality.
A High Court sitting in Ibadan earlier declared the convention null and void, prompting an appeal that is now awaiting judgment.
Zamfara PDP Awaits Court Decision
The spokesperson of the Zamfara PDP, Alhaji Haliru Andi, confirmed that the party leadership in the state remains committed to the PDP for now.
According to him, the governor and party stakeholders will only consider leaving if the internal crisis persists or if the court ruling undermines the legitimacy of the party leadership.
He explained that as long as the PDP remains legally recognized and resolves its leadership dispute, Governor Lawal and his supporters intend to remain within the party.
With the court ruling still pending and political calculations ahead of the 2027 election cycle intensifying, the coming weeks could determine whether Zamfara witnesses a major political shift.
