Harry Styles has revealed how the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne prompted him to deeply re-evaluate his life and priorities.

Payne tragically passed away in October 2024 at 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.

Speaking on his Apple Music show with DJ Zane Lowe, Styles described losing a friend “like you in so many ways” as particularly difficult.

He called Payne someone with “the kindest heart who just wanted to be great” and shared that the loss inspired him to ask himself: “What do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?”

Styles emphasized that one of the best ways to honor friends who pass away is by living life fully.

The singer admitted he still finds it challenging to talk about Payne, whom he described as “a super special person,” and noted the complexities of grieving in the public eye.

The pair rose to fame together in the globally successful boy band One Direction, alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik.

The band was formed during the 2010 season of The X Factor and went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016, after which all members pursued solo careers. They reunited briefly to pay tribute at Payne’s funeral.

After a nearly four-year break from releasing music, Styles returned in January 2026 with his single Aperture, the lead track from his upcoming fourth album Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally.

Reflecting on his artistic influences, Styles shared that he values seeing musicians discover themselves and show their ordinary human side, which he believes resonates most with audiences.

The album promises to explore both personal growth and musical experimentation, marking a reflective and transformative chapter in Styles’ solo career.
