President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promoted Ibrahim Masari to the position of Special Adviser on Political Affairs, a move that strengthens the administration’s political coordination ahead of key national developments.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, Masari will now serve alongside Yau Darazo, who was appointed to the same advisory role in July 2023.
The appointment is part of efforts by the presidency to reinforce strategic political engagement across the country.
Masari, a longtime political ally of President Tinubu, was previously serving as Senior Special Assistant on Political Affairs before his elevation.
His new role places him among the top political advisers within the presidency, with broader responsibilities and closer access to the president.
Expanded Role in Tinubu’s Political Strategy
As Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Masari is expected to play a more strategic role in shaping political relationships, strengthening party structures, and supporting government initiatives across Nigeria.
Special Advisers in the presidential hierarchy typically hold more senior positions than Senior Special Assistants.
They often contribute directly to policy direction, political negotiations, and strategic decision-making at the highest levels of government.
Masari has been regarded as an influential political figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress, particularly in Nigeria’s North-West region.
His experience within the party structure has made him a key figure in political mobilisation and internal party coordination.
Before joining the presidency, Masari served as the Welfare Secretary of the All Progressives Congress during the tenure of Adams Oshiomhole as the party’s national chairman.
His elevation reflects the administration’s continued reliance on trusted political allies with deep party experience.
Unlike ministerial positions, the appointment of presidential aides such as Special Advisers does not require confirmation by the National Assembly. They serve directly at the discretion of the president.
Strengthening the Presidential Advisory Team
The promotion highlights President Tinubu’s effort to consolidate his political advisory team and maintain strong coordination between the presidency and party structures nationwide.
Masari’s expanded responsibilities are expected to further support the administration’s political strategy and engagement with stakeholders across Nigeria.
