At least 12 people have been killed and several others injured after suspected armed herdsmen launched a fresh attack on communities in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
The deadly assault occurred on Thursday in Tyungu Jam and Mbaav communities, located in the Yaav and Mbadura council wards.
Local residents said the attackers stormed the area, causing panic as villagers fled for safety.
Witnesses described the situation as terrifying, with men, women, children, and elderly residents running into nearby bushes to escape the violence.
Governor Condemns “Barbaric” Killings
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia strongly condemned the killings, describing the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.
In a statement issued by his Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
Alia said the government would ensure those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.
He also directed security agencies to intensify operations in the affected communities to prevent further attacks and protect residents.
The governor acknowledged that more than 400 security personnel had recently been deployed to Jato Aka and other parts of Kwande LGA but admitted the latest attack showed more action was needed.
Residents Cry for Urgent Security Intervention
Community members said the attack left families scattered while homes were threatened by armed attackers.
A resident who spoke anonymously said the community had not received immediate security intervention during the early stages of the assault.
According to locals, the victims include Shagba Tyokase, Shagba Terease, Liambee Yohane, Tordue Dooshima, Tordue Doove, Liamkpur Aondosoo, Akule John, Adezamber Gyuse, and Terundu Tyozuur, while one victim’s identity is yet to be confirmed.
Several injured residents are currently receiving medical treatment.
Search Ongoing for Missing Residents
Community sources said volunteers and local residents are searching nearby forests for missing people believed to have fled during the attack.
The renewed violence highlights the persistent security challenges facing several communities in Kwande Local Government Area, where repeated attacks by suspected armed herders have led to deaths, displacement, and fear among residents.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while security agencies continue operations to restore peace in the affected areas.
