2027 Elections: Four Ministers May Exit Tinubu Cabinet to Pursue Political Ambitions

President Bola Tinubu

Fresh political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections may lead to a reshuffle in the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as at least four ministers are reportedly preparing to resign in order to contest elective offices in their respective states.

Political insiders say the ministers are positioning themselves for governorship and legislative races in states where current governors will complete their constitutionally permitted two terms in 2027.

Those mentioned include the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu; the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

The development follows the release of the revised election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which schedules party primaries between April 22 and May 20.

Under Nigeria’s electoral laws, political appointees must resign their appointments before participating in party primaries as aspirants or delegates.

Adelabu Targets Oyo Governorship

Sources indicate that Adelabu may soon step down from his ministerial position to pursue the governorship of Oyo State under the All Progressives Congress platform.

Adelabu previously contested the governorship race against Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party in both 2019 and 2023 but was unsuccessful.

His aide confirmed that while the minister intends to run for governor, only President Tinubu can officially request his resignation.

The aide added that Adelabu would step down at the appropriate time in compliance with electoral regulations.

Bauchi Governorship Race Intensifies

Speculation is also growing in Bauchi State as both Pate and Tuggar are believed to be interested in contesting the governorship seat.

Pate has previously attempted to secure the governorship ticket in past elections and remains politically active in the state.

Supporters say recent grassroots engagements and empowerment initiatives suggest he may join the race again.

Similarly, Tuggar’s political activities across Bauchi have fueled speculation that he intends to run for governor.

His media adviser confirmed that the minister has expressed interest and will comply with all electoral guidelines before declaring his candidacy.

Onyejeocha Eyes National Assembly Return

Meanwhile, Onyejeocha is reportedly considering a return to the National Assembly.

The Abia-born politician served four consecutive terms in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023, representing the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency in Abia State.

INEC Denies Resignation Deadline Claim

The electoral commission recently dismissed claims circulating online that March 26 had been set as a deadline for political appointees to resign.

INEC described the information as false and advised the public to rely only on official announcements.
