Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that the growing number of governors under the All Progressives Congress will not intimidate him from contesting the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.
Speaking during an empowerment programme in Nimo, located in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Obi insisted he would remain in the race even if the ruling party controls the majority of state governors.
According to him, the presence of about 30 governors aligned with the APC would not stop him from pursuing his presidential ambition.
Obi said attempts by political forces to discourage him from contesting the election would fail.
He emphasised that his focus is on ensuring Nigeria has a credible democratic process where the outcome reflects the will of the people.
The former presidential hopeful also confirmed that he is now a member of the African Democratic Congress, explaining that his decision to leave the Labour Party was influenced by prolonged leadership disputes within the party.
Obi stated that several court rulings had favoured his faction during the Labour Party crisis but alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission initially refused to recognise the decisions.
He claimed the situation changed after he exited the party at the end of 2025.
Despite the political challenges, Obi maintained that he remains committed to contesting the 2027 presidential election if the process is free and fair.
He further criticised the state of the nation, arguing that Nigeria is currently facing serious systemic problems.
According to him, the country’s political and economic structures have collapsed and require urgent reforms.
Obi also lamented the widening gap between the rich and the poor, stating that greed among wealthy individuals has worsened the nation’s inequality.
He noted that the political system appears heavily skewed against ordinary citizens.
The former governor stressed that his political ambition is driven by a desire to build a country where merit, hard work and equal opportunity determine success rather than political connections.
Obi praised the lawmaker who organised the empowerment programme, noting that initiatives that support ordinary citizens demonstrate the importance of electing responsible leaders.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to support leaders who prioritise national development and inclusive governance.
