Brentford defender Michael Kayode is making headlines after revealing his ambition to play for Italy’s senior national team while expressing gratitude for the support from his Nigerian fans.
Born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents, the 21-year-old right-back has already represented Italy at under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels.
He is currently provisionally cap-tied to the Azzurri but could switch allegiance to Nigeria via a one-time change of association.
Kayode has caught the attention of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, but he remains focused on earning a senior call-up for Italy, with crucial 2026 World Cup playoff matches against Northern Ireland approaching.
Speaking to The Athletic, Kayode emphasized the importance of consistent club performances, stating:
“It’s every player’s dream to be in the national team, especially now because of World Cup qualifications. I really hope we qualify.
Performing well at the club level is key because if you don’t, you won’t get a call-up.
I just focus on Brentford, and if I get the opportunity, that’s it.”
Despite his Italian aspirations, Kayode has praised his Nigerian supporters, acknowledging the pride they feel in his achievements. He added:
“I’m happy that the Nigerian people are happy for me. The opportunity to play for both countries is amazing.”
Kayode’s career highlights include scoring the winning goal in the 2023 European Under-19 Championship final for Italy and developing a reputation for his distinctive long-throw ability at Brentford.
His blend of defensive solidity, attacking support, and set-piece expertise makes him a rising talent in European football.
As he continues to shine in the English Premier League, the football world is watching whether Kayode will fulfill his dream of playing in the FIFA World Cup 2026 while maintaining strong ties to his Nigerian heritage.
