Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has called on stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman to convert their club success into international triumphs, pushing Nigeria closer to ending its trophy drought.
Speaking on the Global Football Insights Podcast, Oliseh highlighted the duo’s elite performances in the UEFA Champions League as evidence of their ability to inspire the national team.
“Osimhen and Lookman are excelling at the highest level. If they lead the team effectively, the rest will follow, and success will come,” Oliseh stated.
Victor Osimhen has been in sensational form for Galatasaray, netting 17 goals in 25 appearances, including seven in the Champions League.
His performance helped Galatasaray reach the Round of 16 for the first time in 12 years.
At the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, Osimhen tallied four goals, narrowly missing the Golden Boot, and was named in CAF’s Team of the Tournament.
Meanwhile, Ademola Lookman, who joined Atletico Madrid from Atalanta in January, has been pivotal in their run to the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.
A victory would make him the first Super Eagles player to lift the Copa del Rey since Emmanuel Amunike in 1997.
Lookman also scored three goals and provided four assists at AFCON 2025, earning a spot in CAF’s Team of the Tournament alongside Osimhen.
Other Nigerian stars impressed as well: Calvin Bassey completed 74 passes per 90 minutes, the tournament’s highest, while Alex Iwobi set a record for line-breaking passes and AFCON appearances by a Nigerian midfielder.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali starred in the third-place play-off with a penalty shootout heroics.
Statistically, the Super Eagles dominated AFCON 2025, winning the most consecutive games, scoring the most goals, and controlling 66% average possession.
With this foundation, Oliseh insists the team’s golden generation must now convert potential into actual trophies.
Nigeria fans hope Osimhen and Lookman can spearhead this historic push and end the nation’s long wait for silverware.
