Ghana marked its 69th Independence Anniversary on March 6, 2026, with renewed calls for stronger trade, investment, and regional cooperation with Nigeria.
Speaking at the Ghana Consulate General in Ikeja, Lagos, Mrs. Barbara Entee, Minister Counsellor and Head of Chancery in Nigeria, emphasized Ghana’s commitment to sustainable prosperity and deepening its historic partnership with Nigeria.
The anniversary, themed “Building Prosperity and Restoring Hope,” drew diplomats from France, Indonesia, Denmark, Burkina Faso, alongside government officials and members of the Ghanaian community in Nigeria.
Entee highlighted the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area in expanding trade, creating jobs, and boosting industrial growth for both countries.
She encouraged businesses to explore opportunities in manufacturing, agribusiness, technology, energy, education, and creative industries.
A mini-exhibition of Ghanaian products showcased entrepreneurship and cross-border business collaboration.
Entee also reflected on Ghana’s independence in 1957 under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, underscoring the vision of freedom, unity, and shared prosperity that continues to guide the nation’s development and engagement with African neighbors.
She reaffirmed the enduring friendship between Ghana and Nigeria, emphasizing cultural, economic, and regional ties strengthened over decades.
Both nations have consistently collaborated within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to promote security, integration, and development.
Nigerians and Ghanaians living in each other’s countries continue to contribute significantly to economic growth, she noted.
The Lagos State Government, through Commissioner Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, praised Ghana’s milestone, highlighting the contributions of Ghanaians to Lagos’ economy and expressing optimism for further trade and investment collaboration.
Denmark’s Consul General, Ms. Jette Bjerrum, also recognized Nigeria as a key regional hub for commercial engagement in West Africa.
Mr. Isaac Ankumah, President of the National Association of Ghanaian Communities in Nigeria, urged the diaspora to support national development and foster unity.
The celebration emphasized Ghana’s resilience, rich culture, and commitment to economic transformation and regional integration.
