Paddington The Musical has made history at the WhatsOnStage Awards after sweeping nine major prizes, becoming one of the most successful shows ever celebrated by theatre audiences.

The West End production, inspired by the beloved children’s stories created by Michael Bond, captivated fans and critics alike following its debut at London’s Savoy Theatre in November.

Its impressive haul equals the long-standing record set by Miss Saigon and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The family musical, based on the marmalade-loving bear and modern film adaptations, was praised for its storytelling, stage design and performances.

Among its many honours were Best New Musical, Best Professional Debut, and multiple technical awards for direction, costume, make-up and sound.

Rising star Timi Akinyosade, just 17 years old, also received widespread recognition after winning Best Professional Debut for his role in the production.

Beyond Paddington’s success, several high-profile stage performers were celebrated during the ceremony held at the historic London Palladium.

Hollywood and Broadway star Rachel Zegler earned two awards, including Best Performer in a Musical for her acclaimed performance in Evita.

The revival drew global attention after Zegler performed the iconic song “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” nightly from the theatre’s outdoor balcony while audiences inside watched via live broadcast.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Bailey was named Best Performer in a Play for his powerful portrayal in a modern production of Richard II, triumphing in a competitive category featuring several notable stage and screen actors.

Other winners included Amber Davies, who took home Best Supporting Performer in a Musical for her role in The Great Gatsby, and veteran actor Stephen Fry, honoured for his supporting role in The Importance of Being Earnest.

The public-voted awards also recognised enduring favourites such as Les Misérables, which won Best West End Show, reaffirming its long-standing popularity among theatre audiences.

Organisers noted that the overwhelming support for Paddington reflects the production’s strong connection with audiences.

By blending nostalgia, modern staging and memorable performances, the musical has quickly established itself as one of the most talked-about additions to London’s theatre scene.
