National News – Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move confirmed in a statement on Monday by his media aide, Nuhu Anka.
According to the statement, the defection follows extensive consultations with party leaders, elders, and supporters across the state, emphasizing the governor’s focus on stability, development, and good governance for Zamfara residents.
Anka explained that Lawal’s decision was largely influenced by ongoing internal challenges within the PDP at both national and state levels.
“Prolonged crises, leadership disagreements, and unresolved structural issues within the PDP have created uncertainty that could hinder effective governance,” he said.
The governor’s switch to APC aims to align with a platform that ensures stronger collaboration with the federal government, improved unity, and accelerated development for the North-Western state.
The final decision came after a strategic meeting at the Government House in Gusau, coordinated by the Deputy Governor and attended by senior officials and key political stakeholders.
Lawal also expressed appreciation to PDP members for their past support, noting that the prevailing political circumstances made the move necessary.
By joining the APC, he reaffirmed his commitment to security, development, and stronger cooperation with the federal government to benefit the people of Zamfara State.
This defection increases the number of APC governors nationwide to 31 and comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, in which Lawal is expected to seek re-election.
Political analysts suggest that this move could strengthen the APC’s influence in the North-West region and provide strategic advantages in upcoming electoral contests.
Lawal’s transition reflects a broader trend of political realignments across Nigeria, driven by the desire for stable governance and effective policy implementation.
Observers note that such defections are often linked to both local and national political calculations, particularly ahead of critical elections.
