US Warns of Possible Terror Threat to American Facilities, Schools in Nigeria

By Our Correspondent

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools across the country.

The warning urges U.S. citizens currently residing in or visiting Nigeria to exercise increased caution, particularly around American diplomatic missions and institutions.

In a security notice released on Monday, the U.S. Embassy advised American nationals to remain vigilant when visiting the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and schools affiliated with the United States.

The alert emphasised the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures amid concerns about potential security risks.

According to the embassy, U.S. citizens should adopt safety measures such as avoiding predictable routines and varying travel routes and times when moving around sensitive locations.

The advisory also recommended keeping mobile phones charged, staying alert in public places, and carefully monitoring their surroundings.

The embassy stated that visitors should maintain a low profile, avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, and review their personal security plans.

Individuals were also encouraged to identify emergency exits when entering public buildings and ensure they are prepared for unexpected situations.

Although the U.S. government did not disclose the exact source of the threat, the alert comes amid heightened global security tensions.

The warning follows recent geopolitical developments involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have triggered security concerns in several regions.

The advisory also comes shortly after protests were reported in Lagos and some northern states by members of the Islamic Movement.

The demonstrations were linked to reactions over recent international conflicts involving Iran and its leadership.

Security analysts say such alerts are often issued as precautionary measures to ensure the safety of citizens abroad whenever intelligence reports suggest possible risks to diplomatic missions or affiliated institutions.

The U.S. Embassy encouraged its citizens to remain informed through official communication channels and to follow all safety instructions issued by local authorities and embassy officials.

Authorities in Nigeria have not yet issued an official response to the alert, but security agencies are expected to maintain heightened surveillance around foreign diplomatic facilities and international schools across major cities.
