National News – Residents of Potiskum Local Government Area in Yobe State have expressed deep concern over the abandoned Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit at the Yobe State Specialist Hospital, Potiskum.
The project, reportedly sponsored by Hon. Fatima Talba, member representing Nangere/Potiskum Federal Constituency, aimed to enhance emergency healthcare services in the bustling commercial town.
Years after its commencement, the facility remains incomplete, sparking worries about the state of emergency medical care for residents.
Locals lament the frequent accidents along major highways, stressing that a functional A&E unit would significantly improve the hospital’s response to urgent cases.
Adamu Ibrahim, a Potiskum resident, said, “When construction began, we were optimistic it would improve healthcare, but the project has been abandoned.
Every day, we pass by and see it deteriorating while people continue to suffer during emergencies.”
Similarly, Ibrahim Isa highlighted the struggles families face when critically ill patients require urgent care, often forcing transfers to other towns, which could prove fatal in time-sensitive emergencies.
Commercial driver Usman Sadiq noted that Potiskum, being a key transit hub for travelers across multiple states, sees numerous accident victims daily.
The absence of a fully operational A&E unit hampers health workers’ ability to manage these emergencies efficiently.
Nurse Gambo Ibrahim emphasized that completing the unit would boost the hospital’s capacity to respond promptly to life-threatening conditions and serve surrounding communities effectively.
Residents, including shop owner Muhammad Mato, also warned that the abandoned building poses security risks, as unmaintained structures can become hideouts for criminals.
Locals have repeatedly called on government authorities and the lawmaker responsible to expedite completion.
“Healthcare is a basic necessity,” one resident stated, “and finalizing this project will greatly benefit Potiskum and nearby communities.”
Attempts to reach Hon. Fatima Talba for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
Completing the Accident and Emergency Unit at Yobe State Specialist Hospital is crucial for improving emergency care, reducing patient transfer delays, and safeguarding the community from both medical and security risks.
