National News – President Bola Tinubu has expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Adegboye Onigbinde, the legendary football administrator and former head coach of the Super Eagles.
Onigbinde passed away on Monday at the age of 88, leaving behind a rich legacy in Nigerian football.
Recognized as the first indigenous coach of the national team in 1982, he played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s football identity and inspiring generations of players and coaches.
In his condolence message, released Tuesday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Onigbinde for his remarkable contributions to grassroots football and the professionalization of football administration in Nigeria.
The President highlighted Onigbinde’s leadership during Nigeria’s historic run to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations and his dedication to the growth of local clubs, notably leading Shooting Stars Sports Club to the African Cup of Champions Clubs final the same year.
Onigbinde also played a critical role in guiding Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Japan and South Korea.
Although the Super Eagles were eliminated in the group stage after facing Argentina, Sweden, and England, his tactical expertise and mentorship remained highly respected nationally and internationally.
Beyond coaching, he served as a technical instructor for FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, continuing to shape the sport off the pitch.
President Tinubu described Onigbinde as a football manager of “discipline, integrity, foresight, and passion,” noting that his contributions will long be remembered by fans, players, and football administrators alike. He prayed for the repose of the departed and comfort for his grieving family.
Onigbinde’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, but his influence on coaching, youth development, and football administration will continue to resonate.
