National News – President Bola Tinubu has intensified efforts to strengthen cooperation between Nigeria’s executive and legislative arms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The President recently held a closed-door meeting with top leaders of the National Assembly of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to discuss governance coordination and political stability.

Sources familiar with the meeting revealed that the engagement was designed to improve collaboration between the Presidency and lawmakers, particularly as political activities gradually build toward the next election cycle.

The discussion followed a recent Iftar gathering where the President hosted federal legislators, signaling continued dialogue between both arms of government.

Among those present were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State.

The meeting reportedly took place shortly after plenary sessions in both chambers of the National Assembly.

Insiders disclosed that the President expressed concern about growing disagreements between the executive and legislative arms in recent weeks.

Some of the tensions were said to stem from debates during plenary sessions involving budget implementation issues and ongoing constitutional amendment discussions.

A federal lawmaker who spoke anonymously said the President urged the leadership of the legislature to maintain unity and manage internal differences carefully.

According to the source, such disagreements, if prolonged, could create the impression of disunity within government and affect public confidence in governance.

Political observers note that occasional disagreements between the executive and legislature are common in democratic systems.

However, analysts believe the recent engagement reflects a broader effort to prevent conflicts that could slow legislative work or affect governance outcomes as the country approaches another election period.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives dismissed claims that the meeting was called because of serious tensions within the legislature.

The spokesman of the House, Akin Rotimi, described the interaction as a routine consultation between the Presidency and parliamentary leadership.

He explained that such meetings allow both arms of government to exchange ideas on national priorities, legislative plans, and policy implementation.

According to him, regular consultations help ensure smoother governance and effective coordination on major national issues.

Political analysts believe sustained engagement between the Presidency and lawmakers will remain important in maintaining stability, supporting reforms, and aligning policy priorities as Nigeria gradually prepares for the 2027 elections.
